Sexual health and intimacy are deeply tied to identity, participation, and quality of life, yet they are rarely addressed in rehabilitation settings. Many clinicians report feeling unprepared to navigate these conversations with patients recovering from illness, injury, or life transitions.
This course introduces a trauma-informed occupational therapy perspective that frames intimacy as a meaningful occupation shaped by nervous system regulation, habits, environment, and identity. Participants will gain practical strategies for addressing sexual health concerns within the scope of rehabilitation practice.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
Identify barriers that prevent clinicians from addressing sexual health and intimacy in rehabilitation settings.
Explain how trauma, chronic stress, and nervous system regulation influence intimacy and relational identity.
Describe intimacy as a meaningful occupation within the occupational therapy framework.
Apply trauma-informed communication strategies when discussing sexual health with patients.
